# Retiring a fault tree

## How to retire a fault / fault tree

There are two options when retiring a tree, both can be combined:

1\. Hide a fault or fault and its subfaults. Hiding a fault is essentially deactivating it. Please refer to [Activating / Deactivating a Fault](https://team.docs.iqmsa.co.uk/learning-paths/minor-edits/editing-a-fault/activating-deactivating-a-fault).

A hidden / deactivated fault will still be accessible by users if they follow a direct link (e.g. a link to the fault was [shared](https://team.docs.iqmsa.co.uk/learning-paths/live-edits/sharing-and-testing)) or if the fault has a reference from other places in the system (e.g. from another fault).
